Four trips, four questions

Each trip is built around one thing the delta can teach: how it feeds Vietnam, how trade on the water works, what salt is doing to the coast, and — for school and university groups — all of it in a structured programme.

Road hours are estimates built from road distances and the expressways now open between Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho; they include the slow first hour leaving the city. Each trip page breaks them down day by day.

The trips are deliberately few. Each one has been shaped around a single question and the stops that answer it, with field notes written for every stop. Adding more trips would mean thinner notes; we would rather adapt one of these four to your dates and interests.

Choosing

How to choose

If you have one day

Stay a night in Can Tho and take the one-day version of Trade on the Water. It starts at 05:00 at the Ninh Kieu wharf, spends the early hours at Cai Rang when the wholesale boats are working, and finishes by early afternoon. A single day from Ho Chi Minh City with no overnight is mostly road; we do not sell it as a learning trip.

If you want to understand food

How the Delta Feeds Vietnam follows rice, fruit and fish from the field to the wharf in two days. It is the trip to choose if you only take one.

If climate is the reason you are coming

Water and Salt goes to the coast, where the changes are easiest to see: salt in the estuaries in the dry season, eroded shoreline, farms that have switched from rice to brackish ponds. It is the most demanding to explain and the most rewarding for readers.

If you are bringing a class

The Delta Study Programme adds three briefing sessions, student tasks for each field stop and a closing discussion. The field-trip planning page covers ratios, consent, food and safety on the water.

What every trip has

Guide

One guide who explains, not narrates

Your guide speaks English and works as an interpreter at every stop. The point of the trip is the conversation with the farmer or the trader, and the guide's job is to make it possible.

Briefing

A short briefing before the field

Fifteen to forty minutes, with a map and the figures for that day. For school groups it becomes a proper session with slides and a task sheet.

Notes

Field notes for each stop

What to look at, the dated source figures, the questions worth asking. You keep them.

Private

Your party only

No joining other travellers. The vehicle, the boat and the guide are yours for the trip.

When to travel

The dry season (December to April) is the easiest for boats and markets. Salinity is a dry-season story and peaks around March and April. The flood season in the upper delta peaks around September to November.

The environment page explains the seasons in more detail, and the destination pages give the month-by-month picture for each place.

Not on this list

We do not run trips longer than four days, stays organised around a host family, luxury stays, or cheap day tours. If you want one of those, say so in the form and we will tell you honestly that you need a different kind of operator. If you want a longer study visit for a university course, we can build a four-day programme and suggest how to extend it on your own.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can we combine two trips?

Yes. Trade on the Water and How the Delta Feeds Vietnam share a base in Can Tho and combine into three days; in the combined plan the market morning belongs to Trade on the Water, so Cai Rang is seen once, properly. Water and Salt starts on a different road and works better on its own.

Do the trips run on fixed dates?

No. Each one is private and runs on the dates you choose, with one exception: the floating-market mornings are better on ordinary weekdays than in the days just before Lunar New Year, when the boats are busier and the river crowded.

Are the trips suitable for children?

Teenagers who are curious do well. Younger children find the early starts and long explanations hard. We say so on each trip page.

Can the guide speak a language other than English?

Ask in the form. We quote English-speaking guides by default and tell you honestly if we cannot provide another language at the level the trip needs.
