Insight Mekong

Do I need to know anything about the delta before the trip?

No. Each trip starts with a short briefing, and the environment and communities pages on this site cover the background in about twenty minutes of reading. The trips suit people who like to ask questions, not people who already know the answers.

Is this a tour for students only?

No. Most of our sample trips are for adults travelling as a couple, a family with teenagers or a small group of friends. One programme is shaped for school and university groups, and the others can be adapted for a class.

Why are there no prices on the trips?

Because the size of the party changes the cost per person more than anything else, and our groups range from two people to a full coach of students. The pricing page explains what a quote contains.

How do we contact you?

Send the form on any page. We reply by email to the address you give, with questions first if the trip needs them, then a draft programme.

Tours

Can we combine two trips?

Yes. Trade on the Water and How the Delta Feeds Vietnam share a base in Can Tho and combine into three days; in the combined plan the market morning belongs to Trade on the Water, so Cai Rang is seen once, properly. Water and Salt starts on a different road and works better on its own.

Do the trips run on fixed dates?

No. Each one is private and runs on the dates you choose, with one exception: the floating-market mornings are better on ordinary weekdays than in the days just before Lunar New Year, when the boats are busier and the river crowded.

Are the trips suitable for children?

Teenagers who are curious do well. Younger children find the early starts and long explanations hard. We say so on each trip page.

Can the guide speak a language other than English?

Ask in the form. We quote English-speaking guides by default and tell you honestly if we cannot provide another language at the level the trip needs.

How the Delta Feeds Vietnam

Will we see the rice harvest?

It depends on the month and on the field. The delta grows two or three crops a year and farmers sow at different times, so in most months some fields are being harvested somewhere. Tell us your dates and we say what you are likely to see.

Can we start in Can Tho instead of Ho Chi Minh City?

Yes. If you are already in Can Tho or flying into its airport, the trip starts at your hotel and the road hours drop to about one hour a day. The price is lower because there is no long transfer.

Do we see pangasius farms?

Not on this trip; the fish story is told on the river with the figures. The floating fish farms on the Hau River are near Chau Doc, which the four-day study programme includes.

Is the food a problem for vegetarians?

No, but it needs warning. Many delta dishes use fish sauce or fermented fish. Tell us in the form and the guide orders separately at each meal.

Trade on the Water

Is Cai Rang still a real market?

Yes, in the early morning. Wholesale boats still trade there, fewer than at the market's peak, and they share the river with tourist boats. By about 08:00 the trade thins out. That is why the trip starts at 05:00.

Can we visit Phong Dien market as well?

Phong Dien is smaller and also trades early, so you cannot see both at their busiest on the same morning. With an extra night in Can Tho we add it on a second morning.

Can we buy from the boats?

Yes, in small amounts from the retail boats. Wholesale boats sell by the load; ask your guide before trying to buy a single fruit from one.

What if it rains?

The market trades in the rain, and the boat has a roof. Heavy storms are more common from May to November; if the boat crew judges it unsafe we wait or change the plan, and we explain the options.

Water and Salt

Will we actually see salt water?

You see its effects rather than the salt itself: closed sluice gates, tanks of stored rainwater, stressed trees, fields turned into ponds. In February to April your guide can often show a salinity reading at a canal or ask a farmer for the latest local measurement.

Is the trip depressing?

It is honest, which is different. Most of the people you meet are adapting with some skill, and the trip spends as much time on their choices as on the problem.

Can we add a night on the coast?

We base the nights in Ben Tre and Tra Vinh towns so that we can name each hotel on your quote and keep the evenings for the briefing. The coast is reached as day visits from those towns.

Why do you say former Ben Tre province?

Since 1 July 2025 Ben Tre and Tra Vinh have been part of an enlarged Vinh Long province. The town names are unchanged and everyone still uses them.

Delta Study Programme

Can the briefings be tailored to our syllabus?

Yes. Send the topic, the level and any assessment the students will do. We adjust the briefings and task sheets and send them for your approval before the trip.

Do you provide a risk assessment?

We send a written description of every activity, vehicle and boat, with the controls we use, for your school to include in its own risk assessment. The school remains responsible for its assessment and its supervision ratios.

Can students interview people freely?

Through the guide, yes, and with the person's agreement. We brief students on how to ask, how to accept a no, and when not to photograph.

Can the programme be shortened to three days?

Yes, by dropping Chau Doc and keeping Can Tho for two nights. Students then miss the fish farms, the flooded forest and the Cham village.

Pricing

Why is your quote higher than a day tour I found online?

Usually because of the guide and the hours. Our guides interpret at every stop and prepare a briefing, and our boats leave early enough to see trade rather than its aftermath. Many day tours share a boat and a guide between dozens of people and arrive later. The pricing page lists the usual differences.

Is there a discount for students?

The group price for a class already reflects the shared costs, which is a larger saving than a percentage discount would be. Accompanying teachers are shown on separate lines.

Which currency do you quote in?

US dollars by default. Ask if you need another currency for your school's budget, and we tell you what is possible.

Can we pay part of the trip locally?

Some items, such as drinks, are paid locally by you. The core of the trip is paid in advance on the terms written on your quote.

How to book

How far ahead should we book?

Private parties can often travel within a few weeks, outside the Lunar New Year period. Schools should start several months ahead because of approvals and consent.

Do you hold hotel rooms before we confirm?

We check availability when we send the draft. Rooms are confirmed when you confirm the trip in writing.

Can we book only a guide?

Our trips are sold as a whole: guide, transport, boats and briefings together. If you want only a guide for one morning, tell us; we answer honestly whether we can help.

What happens if a boat cannot run?

The boat crew and the guide decide on safety on the day. If a boat stop cannot go ahead we replace it with a land stop on the same theme, and the quote explains how unused costs are handled.

Destinations

Which single place should we choose?

Can Tho, if you have one or two nights. It shows rice, fruit and river trade within a short distance and has the widest choice of hotels.

Is Soc Trang still a province?

No. Since 1 July 2025 it has been part of Can Tho city. The town is still called Soc Trang.

Can we visit all four places in one trip?

Not well in four days or fewer, which is the longest trip we run. Choose two: Can Tho with Chau Doc, or Can Tho with Soc Trang.

Is Phu Quoc part of the delta?

Administratively it is now in An Giang province, but it is an island in the Gulf of Thailand with a different story. Our trips do not go there.

Can Tho

Is Can Tho worth it for a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City?

Not for the floating market. The trade is over by about 08:00, before a day trip could arrive. Stay one night.

Which is better, Cai Rang or Phong Dien?

Cai Rang is larger and still has wholesale boats; Phong Dien is smaller and rowed boats are more common. Both trade early. With two nights you can see both.

Where should we stay?

Near Ninh Kieu, so the boats are a short walk from the hotel at 05:00. Your quote names the hotel.

Does Can Tho flood?

Low-lying central areas can flood at the highest tides in October and November; the ministry warned of this in 2025. We check the tide forecast for your dates and plan the day around it.

Read in full: Can Tho.

Soc Trang

Can we enter the pagodas?

Usually yes, the grounds and often the main hall. Remove shoes before entering a hall, cover shoulders and knees, and ask before photographing monks.

Is Soc Trang a separate province?

Not since 1 July 2025, when it became part of Can Tho city. The town keeps its name.

Is it worth coming for Ok Om Bok?

It is a lively time, but crowded, and the date moves with the lunar calendar. Tell us your dates and we check the year's date.

What should we eat?

Bún nước lèo, a noodle soup with lemongrass and a light fermented-fish note, and bánh pía. Your guide explains which community each dish comes from.

Read in full: Soc Trang.

Chau Doc

Can we visit a Cham village respectfully?

Yes, with a guide who arranges it and a clear dress code. Avoid prayer times, ask before photographing people and do not enter a mosque's prayer hall without being invited.

Is the flood dangerous for visitors?

The 2025 peak, for example, was forecast well below the 2000 record. During the peak days the authorities advised people to limit travel at high tide, early morning and late afternoon, and our boat crews follow local advice.

Can we continue to Cambodia by boat?

A scheduled fast boat runs from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh. It is outside our trips, but we can end the trip in Chau Doc so you can take it.

Is Tra Su worth it in the dry season?

It is quieter and lower, but the forest and the birds are still there. The flood season is the more instructive time.

Ben Tre coast

Is Ben Tre the same as My Tho?

No. My Tho is on the north bank of the Tien River, in the former Tien Giang province, now Dong Thap. Ben Tre is across the river on the islands, reached by the Rach Mieu bridges.

Can we swim on this coast?

It is a muddy, tidal coast of mangroves and mudflats rather than a swimming beach. We do not plan swims.

Why include Tra Vinh?

Because the Khmer rice villages near Tra Vinh show how a different community adapts to the same salt, and the Co Chien mouth completes the picture.

Is drinking water safe in the dry season?

Drink bottled water, as everywhere in the delta. Local households often rely on stored rainwater in the dry months, which is one of the things the trip looks at.

The delta's environment

Is the Mekong Delta really sinking?

Yes, on average by around a centimetre a year according to studies reported in 2019 and 2025, faster in places where groundwater is pumped heavily. Combined with a mean height of about 0.8 m, that is the main long-term risk.

Is salinity getting worse every year?

Not every year. The 2025–26 season was rated below the multi-year average, while 2016 and 2020 were extreme. It varies with upstream flows and tides, which is why we always give the year.

Are the dams the only cause of sediment loss?

No. Sand mining in the rivers is also named as a cause of erosion. The dams are the largest factor in the figures we cite.

Can visitors see any of this?

Yes: eroded shorelines, closed sluice gates, rain tanks, flood marks on walls, fields turned into ponds. The trips are built to show them.

Communities of the delta

Is it appropriate to visit a pagoda as a non-Buddhist?

Yes. Khmer pagodas are generally open to respectful visitors. Dress modestly, remove shoes in the halls and ask before photographing.

Can we attend a Khmer festival?

Often, as quiet guests. Festival dates follow the lunar calendar and change each year; tell us your dates and we check.

Do people mind being asked about their lives?

Most people are generous when asked politely and given a reason. The guide explains who you are and why you are asking. If someone is busy or prefers not to talk, we move on.

Where are the Cham villages?

Across the Hau River from Chau Doc, at Chau Giang and Chau Phong, reached by a short boat crossing.

School and university trips

What age group is the programme suitable for?

Upper-secondary students and older. Younger children find the early starts, long conversations and coach hours difficult.

Do you provide teaching materials?

Yes: briefing slides, task sheets and field notes. We adapt them to your syllabus if you send it.

Can parents join?

Parents can travel as additional adults if the school agrees; they are priced as participants.

What happens if a student falls ill?

The guide and the teacher decide together. Can Tho has hospitals; in smaller towns the guide knows the nearest clinic. Your insurance covers the cost.

About us

Who are the guides?

English-speaking guides who know the delta and can interpret conversations at farms, markets and pagodas. Your quote describes the guide's role for each day.

Do you work with schools outside Vietnam?

Yes. International schools and universities can send the form; the field-trip planning page covers what they usually need.

Where are you based?

We work by form and email, and the trips run from Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho.
