Planning a field trip to the delta

What teachers and lecturers usually need to settle before a Mekong Delta field trip can go ahead: learning objectives, the right length, supervision, consent and health, safety on boats, food, and a reading list built from primary sources.

Start with the question

A good field trip has one question that students can answer with evidence by the end. The delta suits many subjects, and the choice of question decides the route:

SubjectA question the delta can answerWhere to look
GeographyIs the Mekong Delta's land disappearing, and why?Coast near Ben Tre and Tra Vinh; dykes upstream
EconomicsWhy are floating markets shrinking when trade is growing?Cai Rang at dawn; fruit depots on the bank
Biology and environmentWhat does a flooded forest do that a rice field cannot?Tra Su near Chau Doc
Agriculture and foodHow does one region produce more than half of a country's rice?Rice country around Can Tho
Religion, history, citizenshipHow do four communities share one landscape?Soc Trang; Chau Giang; Sam Mountain

The Delta Study Programme combines several of these in four days. Shorter trips — Trade on the Water or How the Delta Feeds Vietnam — work for one question.

How long

Two days is the useful minimum for a class from Ho Chi Minh City: the delta's most instructive hours are early in the morning, so students need to sleep there. Can Tho is about 171 km away, roughly three to three and a half hours by coach on the expressways. Three or four days lets you add a second base — Chau Doc for the flood, the fish farms and the Cham, or Soc Trang for the Khmer — and to run briefings that build on each other. Beyond four days, students tire of the coach and the returns fall.

Supervision, consent and health

  • Supervision ratios are set by your school's policy, not by us. We plan rooms, boats and vehicles around the number of adults you bring.
  • Consent and medical forms are yours to collect. We send a written description of every activity, vehicle and boat so parents know what they are agreeing to.
  • Heat. Can Tho's mean daily maximum is about 30–34 °C in every month, highest in April. We schedule field work early and late and rest in the middle of the day.
  • Mosquitoes. Dengue in Vietnam peaks from June to October, mostly in the centre and south. Students need repellent and long sleeves at dusk; follow your own health service's advice on vaccinations.
  • Insurance is arranged by the school or the families.

Safety on the water

Boats are central to a delta trip, so this is usually the first question a school asks. Vietnamese rules require passengers on cross-river passenger boats to wear or hold a life jacket from leaving the pier until docking, and Can Tho's transport department has instructed that passengers at tourist piers wear life jackets and that boats must not exceed their passenger limits. On our trips everyone wears a life jacket for the whole time on the water, whatever the boat.

  • Boats are chosen for the group's size, with the number of passengers below the boat's limit
  • Students board and leave one at a time, with a teacher counting on the wharf and on board
  • No standing on roofs or gunwales; no trailing hands in the water near propellers
  • The boat crew and the guide can cancel or change a boat stop for weather; we replace it with a land stop on the same theme

Food and dietary needs

Delta food is one of the pleasures of the trip and one of its risks for some students. Fish sauce and fermented fish are everywhere, shellfish and peanuts are common, and many dishes are cooked in shared kitchens. Send a full dietary list with allergies well before departure; we brief each restaurant in advance and the guide checks at the table. Vegetarian and halal meals need particular planning in some towns, and we tell you honestly where the choice is limited.

Task sheets and briefings

For each stop we prepare a task sheet with four parts: observe (what to look at and sketch), measure or count (boats, trees, flood marks), source (one figure with its publisher and date), and ask (two or three questions for a farmer, trader or community member through the guide). Briefings at the start of each day set up the question; a closing session asks teams to argue a position with their evidence.

  1. 01

    Before the trip

A reading pack and an outline of the briefings for the teacher to adapt.

  2. 02

    Each morning

A short briefing with the map and the day's figures.

  3. 03

    At each stop

The task sheet: observe, count, source, ask.

  4. 04

    Last day

Teams present and defend a position using their own evidence.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

What age group is the programme suitable for?

Upper-secondary students and older. Younger children find the early starts, long conversations and coach hours difficult.

Do you provide teaching materials?

Yes: briefing slides, task sheets and field notes. We adapt them to your syllabus if you send it.

Can parents join?

Parents can travel as additional adults if the school agrees; they are priced as participants.

What happens if a student falls ill?

The guide and the teacher decide together. Can Tho has hospitals; in smaller towns the guide knows the nearest clinic. Your insurance covers the cost.
