Chau Doc, where the flood arrives

A border town on the Hau River where the Mekong enters Vietnam's delta. Floating fish farms, Cham Muslim villages across the water, a hill covered in shrines, and a flooded forest that shows what the delta was like before the dykes.

What Chau Doc actually is

Chau Doc is a busy river town, a pilgrimage centre and a border crossing, all at once. For a learning trip it has four things nowhere else in the delta has together. The first is the river itself, which arrives here from Cambodia carrying the autumn flood; in October 2025 the flood peak at Chau Doc was forecast at 3.50–3.70 m, well below the record of 4.90 m set in 2000. The second is aquaculture on the water: the national tourism authority describes a floating fish-farm village on the Hau River about fifty years old, with fish raised in cages under the houses.

The third is the Cham. Across the river at Chau Giang and Chau Phong live Cham Muslim communities with their mosques and stilt houses; the Mubarak mosque, first built in 1750 and rebuilt in 1922, is the only mosque in An Giang ranked a national relic. Nationally the 2019 census counted 178,948 Cham. The fourth is Sam Mountain, about 284 m high, with some two hundred religious sites on its slopes and the temple of the Lady of the Realm at its foot, whose festival UNESCO added to its intangible heritage list in December 2024.

About 25 km away, Tra Su is a melaleuca forest of some 850 ha that stands in water through the flood season. It shows what much of this area looked like before canals and high dykes turned it into rice land.

How many nights

One night is the minimum because of the distance: at four and a half hours or more from Ho Chi Minh City, a day trip is a day in a vehicle. With one night you can see the fish farms and the Cham village in the morning and Tra Su in the late afternoon light. A second night adds Sam Mountain at dawn, before the pilgrims and the heat.

The Delta Study Programme spends one night here on its third day.

Getting there

By road from Ho Chi Minh City, about 235 km, four and a half to five and a half hours; the national tourism authority gives about five hours. From Can Tho, about 120 km, two and a half to three hours. Chau Doc is also a river gateway to Cambodia: a scheduled fast boat runs to Phnom Penh, leaving at 07:00, with a published fare of 1,640,000 VND for June 2026 to June 2027. Check the operator's timetable and the Cambodian entry rules for your passport before relying on it.

When to skip Chau Doc

  • If you have two days or fewer in the delta — the drive takes too large a share
  • During the Lady of the Realm festival, unless that is your subject
  • If you cannot respect dress codes at the mosque: covered arms and legs, headscarves for women in prayer areas
  • If your group dislikes small open boats; the fish farms and Tra Su are visited by boat

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can we visit a Cham village respectfully?

Yes, with a guide who arranges it and a clear dress code. Avoid prayer times, ask before photographing people and do not enter a mosque's prayer hall without being invited.

Is the flood dangerous for visitors?

The 2025 peak, for example, was forecast well below the 2000 record. During the peak days the authorities advised people to limit travel at high tide, early morning and late afternoon, and our boat crews follow local advice.

Can we continue to Cambodia by boat?

A scheduled fast boat runs from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh. It is outside our trips, but we can end the trip in Chau Doc so you can take it.

Is Tra Su worth it in the dry season?

It is quieter and lower, but the forest and the birds are still there. The flood season is the more instructive time.
