Four places, four lessons
Each of these places shows one part of how the delta works more clearly than anywhere else: Can Tho for rice and trade, Soc Trang for the Khmer and the coast, Chau Doc for floods, fish and the Cham, and the Ben Tre coast for salt. Here is what each one teaches, how long it needs and when to leave it out.
The delta in one paragraph
The Mekong reaches Vietnam as two great branches, the Tien and the Hau, which split again into several mouths before they reach the sea. Between and around them lies a flat plain built from river mud, with a mean height of about 0.8 m above sea level according to a 2019 elevation study. It covers about 12.8% of Vietnam's land and holds nearly 18% of its people, and it produces more than half of the country's rice. Upstream, near the Cambodian border, the land floods each autumn. Downstream, near the sea, salt pushes inland each spring. Most of what is interesting about the delta happens between those two seasons.

A note on names
Vietnam merged its provinces on 1 July 2025, and the delta's map changed more than most. Can Tho city now includes the former Soc Trang and Hau Giang provinces. Vinh Long province now includes the former Ben Tre and Tra Vinh. An Giang now includes the former Kien Giang, and Dong Thap includes the former Tien Giang. Town names such as Soc Trang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh and Chau Doc are unchanged and in everyday use. On this site we use them freely, and say "former province" where the difference matters.

The four places
| Place | What it teaches | Nights | From Ho Chi Minh City | Good months |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Can Tho | Rice, fruit, river trade, the floating market | 1–2 | About 171 km, 3–3.5 hours | December to April |
| Soc Trang area | Khmer communities, Hoa traders, the coastal edge | 1 | About 227 km, 4–5 hours | December to April |
| Chau Doc | Floods, fish farms, the Cham, a border town | 1–2 | About 235 km, 4.5–5.5 hours | September to November for the flood; December to April for comfort |
| Ben Tre coast | Salinity, coconut, erosion, adaptation | 2 | About 85 km to Ben Tre town, about 2 hours | February to April for salinity |
Distances are road kilometres from central Ho Chi Minh City calculated with OpenStreetMap routing; drive times are our estimates, including the slow exit from the city.

Which place for which question
Where Vietnam's rice comes from
Start in Can Tho. Rice country is a short drive from the hotels, the river trade is at the bottom of the street, and the orchards of Phong Dien are close by.
How produce moved by water, and why it stopped
Also Can Tho, for Cai Rang at dawn — the main surviving wholesale floating market, smaller than its peak.
What salt and erosion are doing
The Ben Tre and Tra Vinh coast, where the river mouths meet the sea, and the coastal edge of Soc Trang.
Places we do not send learning trips
Some well-known stops are left off on purpose. My Tho and the islands opposite it are pleasant but heavily packaged; the coconut-candy and honey workshops there show the visitor economy more than the farm economy. The floating markets of Cai Be, Nga Nam and Nga Bay have faded or moved ashore, according to a 2024 report in the national culture newspaper; we describe them on the trips rather than visit them. And we do not run long circuits through every province — one well-chosen place, seen properly, teaches more.

Seasons at a glance
Rainy season roughly May to November, dry December to April. Chau Doc is at its most instructive in the autumn flood; the coast shows salinity in the late dry season.
Each destination page has its own month-by-month notes, and the trips page shows which trip suits which month.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Which single place should we choose?
Can Tho, if you have one or two nights. It shows rice, fruit and river trade within a short distance and has the widest choice of hotels.
Is Soc Trang still a province?
No. Since 1 July 2025 it has been part of Can Tho city. The town is still called Soc Trang.
Can we visit all four places in one trip?
Not well in four days or fewer, which is the longest trip we run. Choose two: Can Tho with Chau Doc, or Can Tho with Soc Trang.
Is Phu Quoc part of the delta?
Administratively it is now in An Giang province, but it is an island in the Gulf of Thailand with a different story. Our trips do not go there.
