The Ben Tre coast, where river meets sea

The islands of former Ben Tre province and the coast of neighbouring Tra Vinh sit between the Mekong's mouths. Coconut, fruit and rice give way to brackish ponds and mangroves as you approach the sea, and every dry season the salt comes a little further up the rivers.

What this coast actually is

Ben Tre is a cluster of river islands between the Mekong's mouths, known across Vietnam for coconut: groves, coconut-candy workshops, and canals shaded by palms. Its upriver end, around Cho Lach, grows fruit trees and ornamental plants; its downriver end, around Ba Tri, Binh Dai and Thanh Phu, runs out into mudflats, mangroves and the sea. Across the Co Chien, Tra Vinh has one of the delta's largest Khmer populations, with pagodas such as Chua Ang beside the Ao Ba Om pond, a national scenic relic since 1994.

What makes the coast a classroom is change. In the dry season, when the river is low, seawater pushes up the mouths; the national forecasting centre's bulletin of March 2026 put salinity of 4 parts per thousand at 30–35 km up the Ham Luong and 35–40 km up the Co Chien — in a season below the long-term average. In the extreme dry season of 2020, the agriculture ministry found salt arriving nearly three months early. Along the shore, a 2022 report counted about 286 km of the delta's 744 km coastline eroding. Farmers here have answered with sluice gates, rain tanks, new varieties and a slow shift from rice to brackish-water ponds.

How many nights

Two. The distances are short — Ben Tre town to Ba Tri is about 36 km, to Thanh Phu about 50 km, and Thanh Phu to Tra Vinh about 47 km — but the interest is in conversations at farms and gates, which take time. One night in each town lets you see both banks of the Co Chien without long drives. A single night works only if you drop Tra Vinh.

The Water and Salt trip uses exactly this pattern: one night in Ben Tre town, one in Tra Vinh, and a day on each coast.

February to AprilLate dry season; salinity at its furthest inland, peaking around March and April in the 2026 forecast; heat building

Getting there

From Ho Chi Minh City the road crosses the Tien River into Ben Tre on the Rach Mieu bridges. The second Rach Mieu bridge opened on 19 August 2025, and the temporary Rach Mieu ferry stopped the next day, so the crossing no longer depends on a boat. Ben Tre town is about 85 km from central Ho Chi Minh City, about two hours. Tra Vinh is about 127 km by the road through Ben Tre. Long-distance buses run from Ho Chi Minh City to both towns; fares vary by operator and date.

Costs on the ground

This coast publishes fewer prices than Can Tho. Pagodas in Tra Vinh do not charge entry in any source we have found; a donation box is usual. Coconut-candy workshops sell their candy by the packet, at prices that vary by shop. Near My Tho, at the northern edge of the area, shared boats to Thoi Son island were quoted at about 20,000–30,000 VND per person and private boats at about 300,000–350,000 VND in 2021–2023 sources. Town hotels in Ben Tre and Tra Vinh are simple; your quote names them.

When to skip this coast

  • If you want the postcard delta of floating markets — there are none here
  • If you have one day; the coast is too far from Ho Chi Minh City to see properly and return
  • If the trip falls in September to November and salinity is your main interest
  • If you want comfortable resort hotels; the towns have simple ones

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is Ben Tre the same as My Tho?

No. My Tho is on the north bank of the Tien River, in the former Tien Giang province, now Dong Thap. Ben Tre is across the river on the islands, reached by the Rach Mieu bridges.

Can we swim on this coast?

It is a muddy, tidal coast of mangroves and mudflats rather than a swimming beach. We do not plan swims.

Why include Tra Vinh?

Because the Khmer rice villages near Tra Vinh show how a different community adapts to the same salt, and the Co Chien mouth completes the picture.

Is drinking water safe in the dry season?

Drink bottled water, as everywhere in the delta. Local households often rely on stored rainwater in the dry months, which is one of the things the trip looks at.
