Can Tho, where the food meets the river

The largest city in the Mekong Delta sits on the Hau River with rice fields, orchards and the Cai Rang floating market within half an hour of the centre. It is the one place that shows how the delta feeds Vietnam in a single short stay.

What Can Tho actually is

Can Tho is a working city of riverside wards, bridges and traffic, not a village on stilts. The riverfront at Ninh Kieu has been rebuilt with an embankment, a pedestrian bridge and a night market, and the Can Tho bridge, opened in 2010, carries the main road south across the Hau River. What makes it worth a learning trip is what lies within half an hour: rice fields with dykes and pumps to the west, the orchards of Phong Dien, the Con Son islet with its agricultural cooperative, and the Cai Rang floating market downstream.

Be clear about Cai Rang. Its floating-market culture was recognised as national intangible heritage in 2016, and figures reported in 2020 put its visitors at about 750,000 a year. The same reporting warned that roads and new embankments were shrinking the space where boats trade. Today wholesale boats still gather in the early morning, fewer than at the market's peak and alongside many tourist boats. By about 08:00 the trade thins out. It is a real market at the end of a long change, and that is precisely why it is worth seeing with someone who can explain it.

How many nights

One night is the minimum for anything on the water. The market works before you could arrive from Ho Chi Minh City, so a day trip sees Cai Rang after the trade, which is like visiting a fish market at noon. With one night you get an afternoon in rice country and a dawn on the river. With two you can add the orchards, a second, smaller market at Phong Dien, and time to read your notes.

Our How the Delta Feeds Vietnam trip uses one night; Trade on the Water can start from your Can Tho hotel; the Delta Study Programme uses two.

When to go

MonthsWeatherWhat you see
December to AprilDry; February is the driest month (about 4 mm of rain); April is the hottest, mean daily maximum about 34 °CThe easiest boats and the clearest mornings; rice harvests in many fields
May to AugustRains begin; afternoon stormsFruit season in the orchards; greener fields
September to NovemberWettest; September averages about 451 mmHigh water; riverside streets can flood at peak tides in October and November

The months just before Lunar New Year are the busiest on the roads and the river, with markets full of flowers and fruit for the holiday. It is colourful and not typical. Mosquito-borne dengue peaks in Vietnam between June and October, so repellent matters most then.

Getting there

By road, the trip from central Ho Chi Minh City is about 171 km. The Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong expressway (62 km), the Trung Luong–My Thuan expressway (51.5 km), the My Thuan 2 bridge and the My Thuan–Can Tho expressway (23 km, opened December 2023) make it a drive of about three to three and a half hours.

Buses leave around the clock from several Ho Chi Minh City stations, including the Mien Tay (Western) bus station; a typical journey is about four hours and published fares are about 170,000–260,000 VND one way. Can Tho International Airport (VCA) is about 9 km from the centre and is served by domestic flights; route lists change, so check with the airlines.

When to skip Can Tho

  • If you have only one day and no overnight: you will spend most of it on the road and see the market after the trade
  • If you want a quiet rural stay: Can Tho is a busy city — the enlarged city counts about 4.2 million people since the 2025 merger
  • If floating markets are your only reason and you expect hundreds of boats
  • If you are travelling in the last days before Lunar New Year and want ordinary working life

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is Can Tho worth it for a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City?

Not for the floating market. The trade is over by about 08:00, before a day trip could arrive. Stay one night.

Which is better, Cai Rang or Phong Dien?

Cai Rang is larger and still has wholesale boats; Phong Dien is smaller and rowed boats are more common. Both trade early. With two nights you can see both.

Where should we stay?

Near Ninh Kieu, so the boats are a short walk from the hotel at 05:00. Your quote names the hotel.

Does Can Tho flood?

Low-lying central areas can flood at the highest tides in October and November; the ministry warned of this in 2025. We check the tide forecast for your dates and plan the day around it.
